Is Roof Installation Really That Expensive?

Is Roof Installation Really That Expensive? When customers contact us to handle their roof installation, their reaction to the price of a new roof can go one of three ways. In the first group are those who have already done their research and have a pretty good idea of what new roofing is going to cost them. In the second group are those who have never had a new roof put on and heard that a basic roof installation costs $20,000 or more (these are the most relieved people when they find out that a typical asphalt shingle roof is between $4,000-$6,000).

Finally, there are some people who come to us and, after hearing how much a new roof costs, wonder why it could possibly cost so much. If you’re in this third group and are wondering why a new roof is expensive, we have a few answers that should help you put some perspective on it.

It’s Protecting Everything You Own

Most people don’t stop to think about how the roof is the first line of defense for your home. It’s protecting your home from weather events such as rain, snow, hail, and wind. Your roof is protecting your house from the sun, wild animals, and the occasional tree branch that falls on it.

When you’ve got something that’s protecting everything under your roof (literally), the outlay of funds for new shingles doesn’t seem like such a bad expense. After all…

It Beats A Soaked House

As we discussed in this article, a lot can go wrong when you start to neglect the health of your roof. Water that gets in an attic can compact insulation and invite black mold into your house. It can also cause electrical fires if it gets into the walls and comes in contact with wiring, and can stain ceilings and walls throughout the house. Whether the roof is failing across the board or you need simple roof repair, it’s important to never put off getting it taken care of.

Roof Installation Is A Specialized Skill

This one is pretty straightforward: roof installation takes some very special skills. While the average replacement only takes one or two days from start to finish — which is a good thing in most people’s minds — that’s not because it’s a simple task. The job doesn’t take long because we have enough people on the site in order to get it all taken care of as quickly as possible. Hiring professionals and paying them for the skill they put into a job is a surefire way to make sure that you’re getting a quality roof and that you won’t have a surprise leak the next time it rains.

Could you install your own new roof? For most people, the answer is a definitive “no.” And for anyone who thinks that they’ll save a lot of money putting on their own roof, we still advise them to seek the help of a professional instead.

Compare The 20-Year Cost

If you get a typical asphalt roof, you can expect it to last for 20 years or more. That’s 20 years of holding up to just about anything the weather and sun can throw at it, day after day.

When considering just what a bargain a new roof can be, think about what you’ll be spending on other aspects of your life over the next 20 years. You’ll probably go through two cars, at a cost of about $40,000. You’ll probably spend $15,000 or more on homeowners insurance. You could spend $25,000 a year getting a masters degree. The list goes on. And while all of these are good things to spend money on, it just goes to show that a new roof really isn’t that expensive in the grand scheme of things. Especially when you consider how long it lasts.

Now let’s say you choose another type of roof, such as a metal roof or clay tiles. Metal roofs tend to last 50 years, and clay tiles might last more than 80. If you plan on living in your house for the rest of your life, having your next roof installed could outlast your next 10 vehicles!

Your Insurance Company Might Pay

You know what? You might not even be paying for your next roof. In many cases, homeowners insurance takes care of the brunt of our client’s fees when it comes to new roof replacement. While they might not cover the claim if the roof is just “old,” they are much more likely to replace it if there are signs of hail damage. If your roof has experienced hail damage — even if it wasn’t necessarily from a recent storm — it’s likely you’ll be eligible for a new roof.

If you think that getting a new roof is too expensive, be sure to get a free estimate from a Georgian roofer. If we find signs of hail damage, that new roof could end up costing you a lot less than you originally thought.

Do You Need A New Roof For Your Georgia Home?

Many people don’t realize just how reasonable the cost of a new roof is, despite everything it does for them. Sure, a roof just sits there every day and you might never give it a second thought for a decade or more (except, maybe, during a hail storm). It’s not flashy like a new car or exciting like a big-screen TV, but it’s a vital part of your home that can’t be ignored.
